Having been a member of the biggest-selling female group for more than eight years, Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams is re-embarking on a solo career with the release of her album, Unexpected. In this exclusive interview with Young Voices, the 27-year-old star opens up to Archna Sawjani about the constant comparisons with band mates Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland.
Hey Michelle! I love your new video.
Aww, thank you! It was actually directed by UK director, Phil Griffin.
Is it important for you to find talent from outside the US?
Absolutely - especially the UK! I love the UK! We were actually just talking about getting out there to do a show or something. I can’t wait to come out there again.
Kelly Rowland seems to have set up home over here.
I know! She’s been over there for a long time. I miss her! Tell her to come back (laughs)! She’s doing her thing over there. I’m very excited for her.
You’ve had a lot of success with your gospel albums. What made you decide to come back to pop and R ‘n’ B music?
I guess because I just love all types of music and it’s something that I missed. It’s not something new to me; this is what everyone knows me best for from my Destiny’s Child days.
The pop critics can be very harsh. Were you scared to come back and do it alone this time?
I never go into something thinking about what the critics are going to say. If I did I wouldn’t do it, because it would probably scare me too much (laughs).
Have the critics ever affected your confidence?
Yeah, especially in the beginning! But if you know who you are, know what you bring to the table and you’re consistent, no one can bring you down.
Are we going to see a new side of you on this album?
I am so happy with this project. I feel blessed to be able to approve every song that went on it. There is no song on the album that makes me cringe when I listen to it - I am very satisfied! You don’t really see a new side of me, but you will see a confident, outgoing, sexy, young lady. I’ve grown so much in the past couple of years and I’m ready to showcase that.

Those of you that came out to Long Island, NY…..the CBS Early Morning Show and also the Wendy Williams show!!!! It really meant a lot to me to see you guys there!!! The fact that y’all had to get up so early and still make it out to see me is something that I will never forget nor do I take for granted!!!!! CBS and Wendy’s shows were sooooooooooo much fun!!! Did y’all see me and Wendy’s blog?? And Charlamagne??!!!!! He’s really strong ladies!!!!!!!! Those hugs he gives are absolutely divine!!!!!! Yummmmmmmmmmmm!!!!! LOL!!!!!
I will be performing Aug 21st in New York City for the J and R Music Festival. It’s gonna be hot!!! My wonderful band headed by the most incredibe drummer Chris Dave will be playing with me!!!! (by the way Aug 19th he’ll be in concert with Mos Def in NYC at the Highland Ballroom…..and YES I will be in attenddance bcuz it’s great to see different artist and musicians come together and just wild out!!! Me and my frames will be there!!

MediaTakeOut.com has just caught wind that former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams may be prepared do dump Beyonce’s father Mathew Knowles as her manager. In the past Michelle has spoke out about her disappointment with the way her label, Sony BMG, promoted her recent projects.
But now MediaTakeOut.com caught wind of a recent interview where she openly criticized her manager Mathew Knowles. Here’s a portion of the interview - which was conducted by the website That Grape Juice:
Interviewer: The majority aren’t always in loop about what goes on behind the scenes, the ‘oh she needs to change her label and management’ is something that is thrown about quite a bit, with both yourself and Kelly, you know what I mean?
Michelle: Uhmmm
Interviewer: What’s your response to such comments?
Michelle: You know what? I am a grown woman and there are decisions that will have to be made. I do know that for my career to progress, I just have to be in constant communication with my management and label and if we don’t see eye-to-eye, then…(long pause)…
Interviewer: dot dot dot?
Michelle: Dot Do Dot.
Interviewer & Michelle: : (laughs)
Girl, you know that the Knowles’ don’t stand for that level of insubordination. Expect a tongue lashing from Matty before the day is up.
Oh and a word of advice - if you’re looking to break away from Mathew Knowles … make sure that your lawyer game is tight … Cause you’re in for a fight….
